Sauna planner

Plan a new sauna from the number of bathers

Building a sauna? Start from how many people will use it. The planner suggests inside dimensions, bench heights by the Finnish rules, the heater size, ventilation and the electrical circuit, as a starting point for your drawings.

Who will use it

Where and how

Typical for a wall-mounted heater. Check the heater's manual once you have chosen one: the bench heights follow from it.

Bench heights

The foot bench sits 10–20 cm above the stones (the law of löyly), the upper bench about 45 cm higher, and the ceiling 100–120 cm above the upper bench. Why →

Before you build

The heater decides the bench heights

Choose the heater early. Its stone height sets the foot bench, and its manual sets the safety distances to the benches, walls and ceiling.

Plan the wiring and vents while the walls are open

The heater circuit, the lights and the vent openings are much easier before the panelling goes up. An electrician makes the connections. Lighting · Ventilation

Bench space

The planner allows 60 cm (24 in) of upper bench per person and a bench of at least 2 m (6.5 ft) if you want to lie down, the guideline from the good sauna guide.

This is a starting point

Real rooms have windows, corners and doors in fixed places. Use the result as a brief for your builder or as a check on a kit you are considering.
